Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the International Theory Competition (ITC)?
The International Theory Competition (ITC) is an international competition dedicated to celebrating excellence in music theory. It provides students with an exciting platform to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge while promoting a deeper understanding of music beyond performance.
2. Who can participate?
The competition is open to both local and international students. Candidates should register for the grade that reflects their current level of music theory study. Those age 12 and below may join Grade 1 to 3 competition while there is no age limit for other grades.
3. How is the competition conducted?
Each participant will complete a written theory paper consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions within a specified time limit. The duration varies according to the grade level.
4. How are winners determined?
The primary criterion is the number of correct answers. If two or more candidates achieve the same score, the candidate who completes the paper in the shortest time will be ranked higher.
5. Can I enter more than one category?
Yes. Participants may register for up to two categories, provided that separate registration forms and fees are submitted for each category.
6. What awards will participants receive?
All participants will receive an Official Certificate of Participation. Outstanding performers will receive Diamond, Gold, Silver, or Bronze awards, while the highest-scoring candidate in each grade will be recognised as Best in Grade and receive a trophy and scholarship cash prize.
7. What should participants bring on the competition day?
Participants should arrive at least 30 minutes before their session and bring their own stationery, including pencils and erasers.
8. Can I change my registration after submission?
Yes, amendments are permitted. However, an administrative fee of RM50 will be charged for each change made after submission.
9. Are registration fees refundable?
No. All registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable once the registration has been submitted and accepted.
10. Will parents and teachers be able to attend the prize presentation?
Each participant is entitled to two complimentary admission tickets to the Award Ceremony. Additional tickets may be purchased on the event day, subject to availability.
11. Is the competition based on the ABRSM or Trinity syllabus?
The International Theory Competition is designed to be syllabus-inclusive and welcomes candidates from different examination boards and music education systems.
While the competition covers core music theory concepts that are commonly found in internationally recognised syllabuses such as ABRSM, Trinity College London, and other equivalent programmes, the questions are not taken directly from any specific examination board.
Candidates are encouraged to register for the grade level that best reflects their current theoretical knowledge and understanding. The competition aims to assess a student's overall grasp of music theory concepts rather than their familiarity with a particular syllabus.
